“Swirl Love”

I’ve always loved painting and drawing Swirls. They can be found in my earliest sketches like “Girl with many Secrets“, but they never took center stage. With my painting Transform – I came close to discovering how to incorporate my love for Swirls in a bigger way, alongside my passion for feminine strength. But I was always fearful of doing more – that it wouldn’t make “serious” art if I focused more on the Swirl itself!

“The First Swirl”

Nearing the end of the first Covid lockdown, I only had one blank canvas left – a smaller 11×14″ canvas. I had spent the entire lockdown creating emotional portraits and expressive larger paintings. I said “Sarah, just paint what you love, have fun, just enjoy painting a Swirl for a change!”

So I painted a blue Swirl. When it was finished, I painted a female form into it, but mainly letting the Swirl predominate. I posted it, almost shy about making a painting almost entirely about a swirl. But I loved painting it! I was a little nervous about what my audience would think of this new style of painting…

It sold within an hour of posting it on Instagram! The new owner loves it. And my fans loved it. So I started a second Swirl…

“Meaning of the Swirl”

The Swirl or Spiral is ancient symbolism going back throughout human history – as far back as cave paintings. Its’ shape is rooted in nature, our DNA and the universe itself!

The Swirl is a symbol of consciousness and our connection with the universe. Which is full of energy and always flowing through us and with us.

The Swirl communicates that we are an important part of the whole. While our social and political systems may not support the equality we desire – the Swirls are here to remind us that we are supported and held by the universe. By tapping into our infinite nature – of thought, love, creativity and energy – we are able to thrive and find our place in the world.
